Information and Broadcasting Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said on Friday that the government was giving a monthly subsidy of Rs 2,000 to all citizens earning less than Rs 40,000 to absorb inflationary pressures after oil price hike.

“Those whose monthly salary is less than Rs 40,000 get Rs 2,000 from the government. Whether they are labourers, farmers, teachers, vendors, working women or any student who works part-time to support their education, they are given the grant,” he said at the press conference.

Mariam urged eligible people to call 786 for relief. “The 2000 grant is transparently awarded after an assessment of the income-level of the caller, who is seeking the grant.”

The minister said the aid was announced before the government took a decision due to the rise in prices of petroleum products. “It was easy for us to raise prices on the first day of our government, but it was Shehbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif who insisted on providing social assistance before raising it.”

He added that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government which increases the POL rate after dark every 15 days. Maryam said the subsidy would also be extended to all those already receiving monthly stipend under the Benazir Income Assistance Programme.

“This is called relief,” he said, criticizing the government for having only one vision of solving the issues faced by the people due to four years of PTI rule marred by incompetence and corruption. “We have done this before and set an example by doing it again. We are not just bringing slogans and educating others because it was PTI that gave gifts of inflation, high unemployment and economic problems to the people,” he said. The minister said people have given PTI chief Imran Khan a chance to bring development and prosperity to the country, but his sole focus is to fill the pockets of the mafia and cartels in support of him.

Mariam said the country was shedding electricity for 18 hours a day in 2013, but it was the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government that reduced it to almost zero.

The minister blasted that “hired PTI spokespersons” were critical of the government’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “These speakers have no right to lecture about the economy because their own Prime Minister Imran Khan removed them from the ministry for poor performance.”
